Cosmetic Executive Women Foundation

Beauty Centre, Institut Gustave Roussy Hospital
CEW Foundation is an international non-profit organisation run with the support of the cosmetics industry. Its main activity is the operation of beauty centres at hospitals, providing beauticians to support the important role that self-esteem can play in women’s recovery from illness. At present it operates centres at 24 hospitals. TFWA has long been a supporter of CEW France thanks to the close relationship between the beauty and duty-free markets.
The Project
In 2011 TFWA Care supported the new beauty centre at the Institut Gustave Roussy, one of Europe’s leading hospitals for the treatment of cancer. The centre has provided 3,800 treatments to more than 3,000 patients in 2011.

The centre employs four specialist beauticians, each trained specially for hospital practice, ensuring a full time presence at the hospital. Patients staying at the hospital can book facial, manicure and massage treatments at the centre, while a day room serves outpatients visiting the hospital for further treatments.
Earlier this year CEW Foundation also launched a medical survey at Institut Gustave Roussy, examining the curative role that beauty care can play in the treatment of breast cancer. The 18-month study aims to lead to a better understanding of how self-esteem and dignity can aid the recovery process.
Beautician Olga Peron says: “When I was very young I wanted to be a nurse, but eventually I graduated as a beautician. When I discovered that I could work in hospital I decided to specialise and went back to school. Today I work with patients every day. Sometimes it is can be very hard when patients do not recover, but we are there to help them go through their difficult times with dignity. The most rewarding work is with patients preparing to be visited by their family: feeling confident in the way you look is so important in human relationships.”
Case Study
A 36 year-old lady who suffered from breast cancer never wanted to be in pictures because, as she said, “with no hair, no eyelashes and no eyebrows, I look dead”. She visited the beauty centre each time she came to the hospital for chemotherapy, for “a quiet hour far from disease, nursing and drugs”.

On one occasion, the beautician established that she was overstressed because she had to go to a family wedding and was ashamed of her appearance. After a facial treatment, the beautician applied make up to her face with a specific method for lashes and eyebrows, gave her a scarf to wear and took a photo on her mobile phone.
The lady was delighted and said: "It’s just like me before my cancer. I didn’t believe it was possible. Can you show me how I can do it?"
After the wedding, she came back to the beauty centre with pictures of her with friends and family.
Get involved
CEW Foundation is always looking for additional funding to provide more beauticians. Companies are also invited to donate prizes to support the many charity auctions, golf tournaments and other events through which the foundation raises its funds.
CEW Foundation also relies on voluntary professional support, and would love to hear from commercial and legal specialists who would be willing to devote some time to the cause.
