What is TFWA?: Duty free & travel retail associations

As well as TFWA, a number of international and regional associations represent the industry’s interests, listed below. Associations marked with an asterisk are TFWA affiliate members.

TFWA Affiliate Membership

Retailers and operators are represented by TFWA through Affiliate Membership through their relevant regional association(s). Under the guidance of the TFWA president, the Affiliate Members Group is influential in several key areas of TFWA’s activities and strategy, aiming at better representing the industry by providing the operators’ perspective on matters of general concern.

The objectives of the TFWA Affiliate Membership scheme are:
• To promote and defend the duty-free sector;
• To improve communication between the key players in the industry;
• To hone TFWA events, to suit the requirements of delegates and to better serve the needs and requirements of the industry
• To better represent the interests of the industry as a whole on the world stage.

Airports Council International (ACI)

Worldwide professional association of airport operators, representing over 1,400 airports in 170 countries and territories worldwide. Organised into six geographical regions: Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America/Caribbean, North America and Pacific.

Asia Pacific Travel Retail Association (APTRA)*

Association of retailers, brand suppliers, travel retail landlords, and national associations in the Asia Pacific region which are in the duty free, tax free or travel retail sector.

Asociacion Sudamericana de Tiendas Libres (ASUTIL)

Non-profit organisation representing duty and tax free operations in
South America.

Duty Free World Council (DFWC)

The Duty Free World Council is an umbrella group for the four world regions and TFWA, enabling the industry to deal with global issues.

European Travel Retail Confederation (ETRC)*

A confederation of national associations acting as an umbrella organisation at the EU institutional level, to lobby and defend the interests of trade within Europe.

Frontier Duty Free Association (FDFA)

Association for Canada's land border duty free shops. The FDFA also has non-voting Associate Members consisting of Canadian airport and US land border duty free shops, as well as duty free trade suppliers.
