N/a'an ku sê Foundation

The foundation, nominated by an industry executive and recently supported by the DFNI Charity Ball, aims to improve the lives of tribal people and wildlife in an impoverished area of Namibia. It is partly funded by tourist revenues from a wildlife lodge and so also offers direct employment opportunities to the local people.

The Project

The main objectives of the project are to maintain a lifeline clinic – with 75% of the pateints being women and children - for the marginalised San Bushman community in Epukiro. Tuberculosis, HIV, parasitic diseases and malnutrition are also very prevalent among the population, but so too are alcohol abuse and rape. Alongside healthcare, the foundation aims to provide education to gradually improve the long-term health of the population.

Almost 45% of the clinic’s patients are children under 18 years’ old, with a quarter of patients under the age of five. Common childhood problems in the region include fungal infections, intestinal worms, diarrhoea, dehydration and mouth infections as well as malnutirition.

The clinic also provides family planning and vaccination services, and an ambulance service to the nearest hospital for emergency cases.
